1ΜιμηταίMimētaiimitate μουmoume , ΓίνεσθεGinestheBe καθὼςkathōsjust as κἀγὼkagōI [imitate] ΧριστοῦChristouChrist .
2ἘπαινῶEpainōI commend δὲdeNow ὑμᾶςhymasyou ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers , ὅτιhoti- πάνταpantaeverything μουmoume μέμνησθεmemnēstheremembering καὶkaiand καθὼςkathōsjust as παρέδωκαparedōkaI passed [them] on ὑμῖνhyminto you . τὰςtasthe παραδόσειςparadoseistraditions , κατέχετεkatechete[for] maintaining
3ΘέλωThelōI want δὲdeBut ὑμᾶςhymasyou εἰδέναιeidenaito understand ὅτιhotithat παντὸςpantosof every ἀνδρὸςandrosman ἡhēthe κεφαλὴkephalēhead ὁho- ΧριστόςChristosChrist , ἐστίestiI have κεφαλὴkephalē[the] head δὲdeand γυναικὸςgynaikosof [the] woman ὁho- ἀνήρanēr[is] man , κεφαλὴkephalē[the] head δὲdeand ΧριστοῦChristouof Christ ὁho- ΘεόςTheos[is] God .
4ΠᾶςPasEvery ἀνὴρanērman προσευχόμενοςproseuchomenos[who] prays ἢēor προφητεύωνprophēteuōnprophesies κατὰkatacovered κεφαλῆςkephalēs[his] head ἔχωνechōnwith καταισχύνειkataischyneidishonors τὴνtēn- κεφαλὴνkephalēnhead . αὐτοῦautouhis
5πᾶσαpasaevery δὲdeAnd γυνὴgynēwoman προσευχομένηproseuchomenē[who] prays ἢēor προφητεύουσαprophēteuousaprophesies ἀκατακαλύπτῳakatakalyptōuncovered τῇtēwith [her] κεφαλῇkephalēhead καταισχύνειkataischyneidishonors τὴνtēn- κεφαλὴνkephalēnhead , ἑαυτῆςheautēsher ἓνhenvvv γάρgarfor ἐστίestiI have καὶkaivvv τὸtovvv αὐτὸautojust [as if] τῇtē- ἐξυρημένῃexyrēmenēher head were shaved .
6εἰeiIf γὰρgar- οὐou{does} not κατακαλύπτεταιkatakalyptetaicover her head , γυνήgynēa woman καὶkai- κειράσθωkeirasthōshe should have her hair cut off . εἰeiif [it is] δὲdeAnd αἰσχρὸνaischronshameful γυναικὶgynaikifor a woman τὸto- κείρασθαιkeirasthaito have her hair cut ἢēor ξυρᾶσθαιxyrasthaishaved off , κατακαλυπτέσθωkatakalyptesthōshe should cover her head .
7ἈνὴρAnērA man μὲνmen- γὰρgar- οὐκouknot ὀφείλειopheileiought κατακαλύπτεσθαιkatakalyptesthaito cover τὴνtēn[his] κεφαλήνkephalēnhead , εἰκὼνeikōn[the] image καὶkaiand δόξαdoxaglory ΘεοῦTheouof God ; ὑπάρχωνhyparchōn[since] he is ἡhēthe γυνὴgynēwoman δὲdebut δόξαdoxaglory ἀνδρόςandrosof man . ἐστινestinis
8οὐou. . . γάρgarFor ἐστινestindid not come ἀνὴρanērman ἐκekfrom γυναικόςgynaikoswoman , ἀλλὰallabut γυνὴgynēwoman ἐξexfrom ἀνδρόςandrosman .
9καὶkaiNeither γὰρgar. . . οὐκouk. . . ἐκτίσθηektisthēcreated ἀνὴρanēr{was} man διὰdiafor τὴνtēn- γυναῖκαgynaikawoman , ἀλλὰallabut γυνὴgynēwoman διὰdiafor τὸνton- ἄνδραandraman .
10διὰdiaFor this reason τοῦτοtouto. . . ὀφείλειopheileiought ἡhē- γυνὴgynēa woman ἐξουσίανexousiana sign of authority ἔχεινecheinto have ἐπὶepion τῆςtēs[her] κεφαλῆςkephalēshead , διὰdiabecause of τοὺςtousthe ἀγγέλουςangelousangels .
11ΠλὴνPlēnhowever , οὔτεoute[is] not ἀνὴρanēr[is] man χωρὶςchōrisindependent γυναικὸςgynaikosof woman . οὔτεoutenor γυνὴgynēwoman χωρὶςchōrisindependent ἀνδρὸςandros[of] man , ἐνenIn ΚυρίῳKyriō[the] Lord ,
12ὥσπερhōsperjust as γὰρgarFor ἡhē- γυνὴgynēwoman ἐκek[came] from τοῦtou- ἀνδρόςandrosman , οὕτωhoutōso καὶkaialso ὁho- ἀνὴρanērman διὰdia[is] born of τῆςtēs- γυναικόςgynaikoswoman . τὰta- δὲdeBut πάνταpantaeverything ἐκek[comes] from τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod .
13ἘνEnfor ὑμῖνhyminvvv αὐτοῖςautoisyourselves : κρίνατεkrinateJudge πρέπονpreponproper ἐστίestiI have γυναῖκαgynaikafor a woman ἀκατακάλυπτονakatakalyptonwith her head uncovered ? τῷtō- ΘεῷTheōto God προσεύχεσθαιproseuchesthaito pray
14ἡhē- οὐδὲoudeDoesn’t αὐτὴautēitself ἡhē- φύσιςphysisnature διδάσκειdidaskeiteach ὑμᾶςhymasyou ὅτιhotithat ἀνὴρanēra man μὲνmenvvv ἐὰνeanif κομᾷkomahas long hair , ἀτιμίαatimiaa disgrace αὐτῷautōto him , ἐστίestiI have
15γυνὴgynēa woman δὲdebut [that] ἐὰνeanif κομᾷkomahas long hair , δόξαdoxaglory ? αὐτῇautēher ἐστινestinit is ὅτιhotiFor ἡhē- κόμηkomēlong hair ἀντὶantias περιβολαίουperibolaioua covering . δέδοταιdedotaiis given αὐτῇautēto her
16ΕἰEiIf δέde- τιςtisanyone δοκεῖdokeiis inclined to dispute [this] φιλόνεικοςphiloneikos. . . , εἶναιeinai. . . ἡμεῖςhēmeiswe τοιαύτηνtoiautēn[other] συνήθειανsynētheianpractice , οὐκoukno ἔχομενechomenhave οὐδὲoudenor αἱhai[do] the ἐκκλησίαιekklēsiaichurches τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God .
17ΤοῦτοToutoIn the [following] δὲde- παραγγέλλωνparangellōninstructions οὐκoukvvv ἐπαινῶepainōI have no praise to offer , ὅτιhotibecause οὐκoukvvv εἰςeisvvv τὸtovvv κρεῖττονkreittonbetter ἀλλ’all’Instead , εἰςeisvvv τὸtovvv ἧττονettondo more harm συνέρχεσθεsynerchestheyour gatherings
18πρῶτονprōtonFirst of all , μὲνmenvvv γὰρgarvvv συνερχομένωνsynerchomenōncome together ὑμῶνhymōn[when] you ἐνenas ἐκκλησίᾳekklēsiaa church , ἀκούωakouōI hear that σχίσματαschismatadivisions ἐνenamong ὑμῖνhyminyou , ὑπάρχεινhyparcheinthere are καὶkaiand μέροςmerosin part τιtiit . πιστεύωpisteuōI believe
19δεῖdeithere must γὰρgarindeed , καὶkaiAnd αἱρέσειςhaireseisdifferences ἐνenamong ὑμῖνhyminyou εἶναιeinaibe ἵναhinato οἱhoiwhich δόκιμοιdokimoiare approved . φανεροὶphaneroishow γένωνταιgenōntaivvv ἐνenamong ὑμῖνhyminyou
20ΣυνερχομένωνSynerchomenōncome together οὖνounNow then , ὑμῶνhymōn[when] you ἐπὶepi. . . τὸto. . . αὐτὸauto. . . , οὐκouknot ἐστίestiI have κυριακὸνkyriakon[the] Lord’s δεῖπνονdeipnonSupper φαγεῖνphageinyou eat .
21ἕκαστοςhekastoseach [of you] γὰρgarFor τῷtō- ἴδιονidion- δεῖπνονdeipnonmeal . προσλαμβάνειproslambaneigoes ahead without sharing ἐνenas τῷtō- φαγεῖνphageinyou eat , καὶkai- ὃςhos[one] μὲνmenWhile πεινᾷpeinaremains hungry , ὃςhos[one] δὲde- μεθύειmethyeigets drunk .
22μὴmē[your own] γὰρgarDon’t οἰκίαςoikiashomes οὐκouk. . . ἔχετεecheteyou have εἰςeisin τὸtowhich ἐσθίεινesthieinto eat καὶkaiand πίνεινpineindrink ? ἢēOr τῆςtēsthe ἐκκλησίαςekklēsiaschurch τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God καταφρονεῖτεkataphroneitedo you despise καὶkaiand καταισχύνετεkataischynetehumiliate τοὺςtousthose who μὴmēnothing ? ἔχονταςechontashave τίtiWhat ὑμῖνhyminto you ? εἴπωeipōcan I say ἐπαινέσωepainesōShall I praise ὑμᾶςhymasyou ἐνenfor τούτῳtoutōthis ? οὐκoukNo , ἐπαινῶepainōI will not !
23ἘγὼEgōI γὰρgarFor παρέλαβονparelabonreceived ἀπὸapofrom τοῦtouthe ΚυρίουKyriouLord ὃhowhat καὶkaivvv παρέδωκαparedōkaI also passed on ὑμῖνhyminto you : ὅτιhoti- ὁhoThe ΚύριοςKyriosLord ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus , ἐνenon τῇtēthe νυκτὶnyktinight ᾗhē- παρεδίδοτοparedidotoHe was betrayed , ἔλαβενelabentook ἄρτονartonbread , καὶkaiand εὐχαριστήσαςeucharistēsaswhen He had given thanks , ἔκλασεeklase[and] broke [it] , καὶkaiand εἰπὲeipesay
24ΛάβετεLabete“ Take φάγητεphagēteyou will eat , ΤοῦτόTouto“ This μούmouMy ἐστίestiI have τὸto- σῶμαsōmabody , τὸtowhich [is] ὑπὲρhyperfor ὑμῶνhymōnyou ; κλώμενονklomenonbreak τοῦτοtoutothis ποιεῖτεpoieitedo εἰςeisin τὴνtēn- ἐμὴνemēnof Me .” ἀνάμνησινanamnēsinremembrance
25ὡσαύτωςhōsautōsIn the same way καὶkai. . . , τὸto- ποτήριονpotērioncup , μετὰmetaafter τὸto- δειπνῆσαιdeipnēsaisupper λέγωνlegōnsaying , ΤοῦτοTouto“ This τὸto- ποτήριονpotērioncup ἡhēthe καινὴkainēnew διαθήκηdiathēkēcovenant ἐστὶνestinis ἐνenin τῷtō- ἐμῷemōMy αἵματιhaimatiblood ; τοῦτοtoutothis , ποιεῖτεpoieitedo ὁσάκιςhosakisas often as ἂνan. . . πίνητεpinētedrink εἰςeisin τὴνtēn- ἐμὴνemēnof Me . ” ἀνάμνησινanamnēsinremembrance
26ὁσάκιςhosakisas often as γὰρgarFor ἂνan. . . ἐσθίητεesthiēteyou eat τὸνton- ἄρτονartonbread τοῦτονtoutonthis καὶkaiand τὸto[this] ποτήριονpotērioncup , τοῦτοtoutothis , πίνητεpinēteyou drink [it] , τὸνton- θάνατονthanatondeath τοῦtouthe ΚυρίουKyriouLord’s καταγγέλλετεkatangelleteyou proclaim ἄχριςakhrisuntil οὗhou. . . ἂνan. . . ἔλθῃelthēHe comes .
27ὭστεHōsteTherefore , ὃςhoswhoever ἂνan. . . ἐσθίῃesthiēeats τὸνtonthe ἄρτονartonbread τοῦτονtoutonthis ἡhēthe πίνῃpinēdrinks τὸtothe ποτήριονpotērioncup τοῦtouof the ΚυρίουKyriouLord ἀναξίωςanaxiōsin an unworthy manner ἔνοχοςenochosguilty of sinning ἔσταιestaiwill be τοῦtouagainst the σώματοςsōmatosbody καὶkaiand τοῦtou- αἵματοςhaimatosblood τοῦtouof the ΚυρίουKyriouLord .
28δοκιμαζέτωdokimazetōmust examine δὲde- ἄνθρωποςanthrōposEach one ἑαυτόνheautonhimself καὶkai[before] οὕτωςhoutōs. . . ἐκekof τοῦtouthe ἄρτουartoubread ἐσθιέτωesthietōhe eats καὶkai[before] ἐκekof τοῦtouthe ποτηρίουpotērioucup . πινέτωpinetōdrinks
29ὁhoanyone who γὰρgarFor ἐσθίωνesthiōneats καὶkaiand πίνωνpinōndrinks ἀναξίωςanaxiōsin an unworthy manner κρίμαkrimajudgment ἑαυτῷheautōon himself . ἐσθίειesthieieats καὶkaiand πίνειpineidrinks μὴmēwithout διακρίνωνdiakrinōnrecognizing τὸtothe σῶμαsōmabody τοῦtouthe ΚυρίουKyriouLord .
30διὰdiaThat is why τοῦτοtouto. . . ἐνenamong ὑμῖνhyminyou πολλοὶpolloimany ἀσθενεῖςastheneis[are] weak καὶkaiand ἄρρωστοιarrōstoisick , καὶkaiand κοιμῶνταιkoimōntaihave fallen asleep . ἱκανοίhikanoia number [of you]
31ΕἰEiif γὰρgarFor ἑαυτοὺςheautousourselves {properly} , διεκρίνομενdiekrinomenwe judged οὐκoukvvv ἂνanvvv ἐκρινόμεθαekrinomethawe would not come under judgment .
32κρινόμενοιkrinomenoiwhen we are judged δὲdeBut ὑπὸhypoby τοῦtouthe ΚυρίουKyriouLord , παιδευόμεθαpaideuomethawe are being disciplined ἵναhinaso that μὴmēvvv σὺνsynwith τῷtōthe κόσμῳkosmōworld . κατακριθῶμενkatakrithōmenwe will not be condemned
33ὭστεHōsteSo , ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers , μουmoumy συνερχόμενοιsynerchomenoiwhen you come together εἰςeisto τὸto- φαγεῖνphageineat , ἀλλήλουςallēlousone another . ἐκδέχεσθεekdechesthewait for
34εἴeiIf δὲdeAnd τιςtisanyone πεινᾷpeinais hungry , ἐνenat οἴκῳoikōhome , ἐσθιέτωesthietōhe should eat ἵναhinaso that μὴmē[it will not result] εἰςeisin κρίμαkrimajudgment . συνέρχησθεsynerchēsthewhen you come together ΤὰTaabout the δὲdeAnd λοιπὰloiparemaining matters . ὡςhōswhen ἂνanvvv ἔλθωelthōI come , διατάξομαιdiataxomaiI will give instructions
