1ΠᾶςPasEveryone ὁhowho πιστεύωνpisteuōnbelieves ὅτιhotithat ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ἐστινestinis ὁhothe ΧριστὸςChristosChrist ἐκekof τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod , γεγέννηταιgegennētaihas been born καὶkaiand πᾶςpaseveryone ὁhowho ἀγαπῶνagapōnloves τὸνtonthe γεννήσανταgennēsanta[Father] ἀγαπᾷagapaloves ‹καὶ›kaialso τὸνtonthose γεγεννημένονgegennēmenonborn ἐξexof αὐτοῦautouHim .

2ἐνenBy τούτῳtoutōthis γινώσκομενginōskomenwe know ὅτιhotithat ἀγαπῶμενagapōmenwe love τὰtathe τέκναteknachildren τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God : ὅτανhotanwhen τὸνton- ΘεὸνTheonGod ἀγαπῶμενagapōmenwe love καὶkaiand τὰςtas- ἐντολὰςentolascommandments . αὐτοῦautouHis τηρῶμενtērōmenwe keep

3αὕτηhautēthis γάρgarFor ἐστινestinis ἡhēthe ἀγάπηagapēlove τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God , ἵναhinathat τὰςtas- ἐντολὰςentolascommandments . αὐτοῦautouHis τηρῶμενtērōmenwe keep καὶkaiAnd αἱhai- ἐντολαὶentolaicommandments αὐτοῦautouHis βαρεῖαιbareiaiburdensome , οὐκouknot εἰσίνeisinare

4ὅτιhotibecause πᾶνpaneveryone τὸto- γεγεννημένονgegennēmenonborn ἐκekof τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod νικᾷnikaovercomes τὸνtonthe κόσμονkosmonworld . καὶkaiAnd αὕτηhautēthis ἐστὶνestinis ἡhēthe νίκηnikēvictory ἡhēthat νικήσασαnikēsasahas overcome τὸνtonthe κόσμονkosmonworld : ἡhē- πίστιςpistisfaith . ἡμῶνhēmōnour

5ΤίςTisWho ἐστινestin- ὁho- νικῶνnikōnovercomes τὸνtonthe κόσμονkosmonworld ? εἰeiOnly μὴmē. . . ὁhohe who πιστεύωνpisteuōnbelieves ὅτιhotithat ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ἐστινestinis ὁhothe ΥἱὸςHuiosSon τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God .

6οὗτόςhoutosThis ἐστινestinis ὁhothe [One who] ἐλθὼνelthōncame δι’di’by ὕδατοςhydatoswater καὶkaiand αἵματοςhaimatosblood , ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ΧριστόςChristosChrist — οὐκouknot ἐνenby τῷtō- ὕδατιhydatiwater μόνονmononalone , ἀλλ’all’but ἐνenby τῷtō- ὕδατιhydatiwater καὶkaiand τῷtō- αἵματιhaimatiblood . καὶkaiAnd τὸtothe ΠνεῦμάPneumaSpirit ἐστίestiI have τὸtowho μαρτυροῦνmartyrountestifies [to this] , ὅτιhotibecause τὸtothe ΠνεῦμάPneumaSpirit ἐστινestinis ἡhēthe ἀλήθειαalētheiatruth .

7ὅτιhotiFor τρεῖςtreisthree εἰσινeisinthere are οἱhoi- μαρτυροῦντεςmartyrountesthat testify : ἕνhenagreement . τὸto- οὐρανῷouranōheaven . ὁhoWhoever ΠατὴρPatērFather ὁhoWhoever λόγοςlogosword καὶkaiand τὸtothe ἅγιονhagiona holy ΠνεῦμαPneumaSpirit , καὶkai- οὗτοιhoutoi[they] οἱhoi- τρεῖςtreisthree ἕνhenagreement . εἰσι.eisiare

8καὶkaiand τρεῖςtreisthree εἰσινeisinare οἱhoi[these] μαρτυροῦντεςmartyrountesthat testify : ἕνhenagreement . τῇtēin [your] γῆgēearth τὸto- ΠνεῦμαPneumaSpirit , καὶkai- τὸtothe ὕδωρhydōrwater , καὶkaiand τὸtothe αἷμαhaimablood — καὶkaiand οἱhoi[these] τρεῖςtreisthree εἰςeisin τὸto- ἕνhenagreement . εἰσινeisinare

9ΕἰEi[Even] if τὴνtēn- μαρτυρίανmartyriantestimony , τῶνtōn- ἀνθρώπωνanthrōpōnhuman λαμβάνομενlambanomenwe accept ἡhēthe μαρτυρίαmartyriatestimony τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God μείζωνmeizōngreater . ἐστίνestinis ὅτιhotiFor αὕτηhautēthis ἐστὶνestinis ἡhēthe μαρτυρίαmartyriatestimony τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod ἐνenwithin μεμαρτύρηκεmemarturekehe has testified περὶperiabout τοῦtou- ΥἱοῦHuiouSon . αὐτοῦautouHis

10ὁhoWhoever πιστεύωνpisteuōnbelieves εἰςeisin τὸνtonthe ΥἱὸνHuionSon τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God ἔχειecheihas τὴνtēn[this] μαρτυρίανmartyriantestimony ἐνenwithin αὑτῷhautōhim ; ὁhowhoever μὴmēvvv πιστεύωνpisteuōndoes not believe τῷtō- ΘεῷTheōGod ψεύστηνpseustēna liar , πεποίηκενpepoiēkenhas made αὐτόνautonHim [out to be] ὅτιhotibecause οὐouvvv πεπίστευκενpepisteukenhe has not believed εἰςeisin τὴνtēnthe μαρτυρίανmartyriantestimony ἣνhēnthat μεμαρτύρηκεmemarturekehe has testified ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod περὶperiabout τοῦtou- ΥἱοῦHuiouSon . αὐτοῦautouHis

11ΚαὶKaiAnd αὕτηhautēthis ἐστὶνestinis ἡhē[that] μαρτυρίαmartyriatestimony ὅτιhoti- : ζωὴνzōēnlife , αἰώνιονaiōnioneternal ἔδωκενedōkenhas given ἡμῖνhēminus «ὁho- Θεὸς»TheosGod καὶkaiand αὕτηhautēthis ἡhē- ζωὴzōēlife ἐνenin τῷtō- ΥἱῷHuiōSon . αὐτοῦautouHis ἐστινestinis

12ὁhoWhoever ἔχωνechōnhas τὸνtonthe ΥἱὸνHuionSon ἔχειecheihas τὴνtēn- ζωήνzōēnlife ; ὁhowhoever μὴmēvvv ἔχωνechōndoes not have τὸνtonthe ΥἱὸνHuionSon τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God τὴνtēn- ζωὴνzōēnlife . οὐκoukvvv ἔχειecheidoes not have

13ΤαῦταTautathese things ἔγραψαegrapsaI have written ὑμῖνhyminto you τοῖςtoiswho πιστεύουσινpisteuousinbelieve εἰςeisin τὸtothe ὄνομαonomaname τοῦtouof the ΥἱοῦHuiouSon τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God , ἵναhinaso that εἰδῆτεeidēteyou may know ὅτιhotithat ζωὴνzōēnlife . αἰώνιονaiōnioneternal ἔχετεecheteyou have ΚαὶKaiAnd ἵναhinaso that πιστεύετεpisteuetebelieve εἰςeisin τὸtothe ὄνομαonomaname τοῦtouof the ΥἱοῦHuiouSon τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God ,

14ΚαὶKaiAnd αὕτηhautēthis ἐστὶνestinis ἡhēthe παρρησίαparrēsiaconfidence ἣνhēnthat ἔχομενechomenwe have πρὸςprosbefore αὐτόνautonHim : ὅτιhoti- ἐάνeanIf τιtianything αἰτώμεθαaitōmethawe ask κατὰkataaccording to τὸto- θέλημαthelēmawill , αὐτοῦautouHis ἀκούειakoueiHe hears ἡμῶνhēmōnus .

15καὶkaiAnd ἐὰνeanif οἴδαμενoidamenwe know ὅτιhotithat ἀκούειakoueiHe hears ἡμῶνhēmōnus ὃhoin whatever ἐὰνean. . . αἰτώμεθαaitōmethawe ask , οἴδαμενoidamenwe know ὅτιhotithat ἔχομενechomenwe already possess τὰtawhat αἰτήματαaitēmatavvv ἃhavvv ᾐτήκαμενētēkamenwe have asked παρ’par’with αὐτοῦautouHim .

16ἘάνEanIf τιςtisanyone ἴδῃidēsees τὸνton- ἀδελφὸνadelphonbrother αὐτοῦautouhis ἁμαρτάνονταhamartanontacommitting ἁμαρτίανhamartiana sin μὴmēnot πρὸςprosleading to θάνατονthanatondeath , αἰτήσειaitēseihe should ask [God] , καὶkai- δώσειdōseiwho will give αὐτῷautō- ζωήνzōēnlife τοῖςtoisto those who ἁμαρτάνουσιamartanousicommit [this kind of] sin μὴmē. . . πρὸςpros. . . θάνατονthanaton. . . . ἔστινestinThere is ἁμαρτίαhamartiaa sin πρὸςprosthat leads to θάνατονthanatondeath ; οὐouvvv περὶperiregarding ἐκείνηςekeinēsthat [sin] . λέγωlegōI am not saying ἵναhina- ἐρωτήσῃerōtēsēhe should ask

17πᾶσαpasaAll ἀδικίαadikiaunrighteousness ἁμαρτίαhamartiasin , ἐστίestiI have καὶkaiyet ἔστινestinthere is ἁμαρτίαhamartiasin οὐouvvv πρὸςprosthat does not lead to θάνατονthanatondeath .

18ΟἴδαμενOidamenWe know ὅτιhotithat πᾶςpasanyone ὁho- γεγεννημένοςgegennēmenosborn ἐκekof τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod οὐχouchvvv ἁμαρτάνειhamartaneidoes not keep on sinning ; ἀλλ’all’- ὁhothe [One who] γεννηθεὶςgennētheiswas born ἐκekof τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod τηρεῖtēreiprotects ἑαυτὸνheautonhimself καὶkaiand ὁhothe πονηρὸςponērosevil [one] οὐχouchvvv ἅπτεταιhaptetaicannot touch αὐτοῦautouhim .

19οἴδαμενoidamenWe know ὅτιhotithat ἐκekof τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod , ἐσμενesmenwe are καὶkaiand [that] ὁhothe κόσμοςkosmosworld ὅλοςholoswhole ἐνenof τῷtōthe πονηρῷponērōevil [one] . κεῖταιkeitaiis under the power

20οἴδαμενoidamenwe know δὲdeAnd ὅτιhotithat ὁhothe ΥἱὸςHuiosSon τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouof God ἥκειhēkeihas come καὶkaiand δέδωκενdedōkenhas given ἡμῖνhēminus διάνοιανdianoianunderstanding , ἵναhinaso that γινώσκωμεν*ginōskōmenwe may know τὸνtonHim who [is] ἀληθινόνalēthinontrue ; καὶkaiand ἐσμὲνesmenwe are ἐνenin τῷtōHim who [is] ἀληθινῷalēthinōtrue — ἐνenin τῷtō- ΥἱῷHuiōSon αὐτοῦautouHis ἸησοῦIēsouJesus ΧριστῷChristōChrist . οὗτόςhoutosHe ἐστινestinis ὁhothe ἀληθινὸςalēthinostrue ΘεὸςTheosGod καὶkaiand ζωὴzōēlife . αἰώνιοςaiōnioseternal

21ΤεκνίαTekniaLittle children , φυλάξατεphylaxatekeep ἑαυτοὺςheautousone another ἀπὸapofrom τῶνtōn- εἰδώλωνeidōlōnidols . ἀμήνamēnAmen .
