2ho- δὲdeMeanwhile ἸωάννηςIōannēsJohn ἀκούσαςakousasheard ἐνenin τῷ- δεσμωτηρίῳdesmōtēriōprison τὰta[about] the ἔργαergaworks τοῦtouof ΧριστοῦChristouChrist , πέμψαςpempsas[and] he sent δύοdyosecond τῶνtōn- μαθητῶνmathētōndisciples αὐτοῦautouhis
3εἶπενeipento ask αὐτῷautōHim , ΣὺSyYou εἶei“ Are hothe ἐρχόμενοςerchomenos[One who] was to come , ēor ἕτερονheteronsomeone else ? ” προσδοκῶμενprosdokōmenshould we look for
4ΚαὶKai- ἀποκριθεὶςapokritheisreplied ho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus εἶπενeipen. . . αὐτοῖςautois. . . , ΠορευθέντεςPoreuthentes“ Go [back] ἀπαγγείλατεapangeilate[and] report ἸωάννῃIōannēto John hawhat ἀκούετεakoueteyou hear καὶkaiand βλέπετεblepetesee :
5τυφλοὶtyphloi[The] blind ἀναβλέπουσιanablepousireceive sight , καὶkai- χωλοὶchōloi[the] lame περιπατοῦσι,peripatousiwalk , λεπροὶleproi[the] lepers καθαρίζονταιkatharizontaiare cleansed , καὶkai- κωφοὶkōphoi[the] deaf ἀκούουσι,akouousiwill listen , νεκροὶnekroi[the] dead ἐγείρονταιegeirontaiare raised , καὶkaiand πτωχοὶptōchoi[to the] poor . εὐαγγελίζονταιeuangelizontaithe good news is preached
6καὶkaiand μακάριόςmakariosBlessed ἐστινestinis ὃςhosthe [one who] ἐὰνean. . . μὴ. . . σκανδαλισθῇskandalisthēdoes not fall away ἐνenon account of ἐμοίemoiMe . ”
7ΤούτωνToutōnAs [John’s disciples] δὲde- πορευομένωνporeuomenōnwere leaving , ἤρξατοērxatobegan ho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus λέγεινlegeinto speak τοῖςtoisto the ὄχλοιςochloiscrowds περὶperiabout ἸωάννουIōannouJohn : ΤίTi“ What ἐξέλθητεexelthētego out ; εἰςeisinto τὴνtēnthe ἔρημονerēmonwilderness θεάσασθαιtheasasthaito see ? κάλαμονkalamonA reed ὑπὸhypoin ἀνέμουanemou[the] wind ? σαλευόμενονsaleuomenonswaying
8ἀλλὰallaOtherwise , τίtiwhat ἐξέλθητεexelthētego out ; ἰδεῖνideinto see ? ἄνθρωπονanthrōponA man ἐνenin μαλακοῖςmalakoisfine [clothes] ? ἠμφιεσμένονēmphiesmenondressed ἰδοὺidouLook , οἱhoithose τὰta- μαλακὰmalakafine [clothing] φοροῦντεςphorounteswho wear ἐνenin τοῖςtois- οἴκοιςoikoispalaces . τῶνtōn- βασιλέωνbasileōnkings’ ‹εἰσίν›eisinare found
9ἀλλὰallathen τίtiWhat ἐξέλθητεexelthētego out ; ἰδεῖνideinto see ? προφήτηνprophētēnA prophet ? ναίnaiYes , λέγωlegōI tell ὑμῖνhyminyou , καὶkaiand περισσότερονperissoteronmore προφήτουprophētouthan a prophet .
10οὗτόςhoutosThis γὰρgarFor ἐστιestiis περὶperiabout οὗhouwhom γέγραπταιgegraptaiit is written : ἸδοὺIdou‘ Behold , ἐγὼegōI ἀποστέλλωapostellōwill send τὸνton- ἄγγελόνangelonmessenger μουmouMy πρὸproahead of You προσώπουprosōpou. . . , σουsou. . . ὋςHoswho κατασκευάσειkataskeuaseiwill prepare τὴνtēn- ὁδόνhodonway σουsouYou .’ ἔμπροσθένemprosthenbefore σουsouYou .’
11ἈμὴνAmēnTruly λέγωlegōI tell ὑμῖνhyminyou , οὐκoukno ἐγήγερταιegēgertaithere has risen ἐνenamong γεννητοῖςgennētois[those] born γυναικῶνgynaikōnof women μείζωνmeizōnone greater ἸωάννουIōannouthan John τοῦtouthe ΒαπτιστοῦBaptistouBaptist . hothe δὲdeYet even μικρότεροςmikroterosleast ἐνenin τῇthe βασιλείᾳbasileiakingdom τῶνtōnof οὐρανῶνouranōnheaven μείζωνmeizōngreater αὐτοῦautouthan he . ἐστινestinis
12ἀπὸapoFrom δὲde- τῶνtōnthe ἡμερῶνhēmerōndays ἸωάννουIōannouof John τοῦtouthe ΒαπτιστοῦBaptistouBaptist ἕωςheōsuntil ἄρτιartinow , the βασιλείαbasileiakingdom τῶνtōnof οὐρανῶνouranōnheaven βιάζεταιbiazetaihas been subject to violence , καὶkaiand βιασταὶbiastai[the] violent ἁρπάζουσινharpazousinlay claim αὐτήνautēnto it .
13πάντεςpantesall γὰρgarFor οἱhoithe προφῆταιprophētaiProphets καὶkaiand hothe νόμοςnomosLaw ἕωςheōsuntil ἸωάννουIōannouJohn . ἐπροφήτευσανeprophēteusanprophesied
14καὶkaiAnd εἰeiif θέλετεtheleteyou are willing δέξασθαιdexasthaito accept [it] , αὐτόςautoshe ἐστινestinis ἨλίαςĒlias[the] Elijah ho- μέλλωνmellōnwho was ἔρχεσθαιerchesthaito come .
15HoHe who ἔχωνechōnhas ὦταōtaears , ἀκουέτωakouetōlet him hear .
16ΤίνιTiniTo what δὲde- ὁμοιώσωhomoiōsōcan I compare τὴνtēn- γενεὰνgeneangeneration ? ταύτηνtautēnthis ὁμοίαhomoialike ἐστὶestiis παιδίοιςpaidioischildren καθημένοιςkathēmenoissitting ἐνenin ἀγοραῖςagoraismarketplaces haand προσφωνοῦνταprosphōnountacalling out τοῖςtois- ἑτέροιςheteroisto others : αὐτῶνautōntheir
17λέγουσινlegousin‘ - ΗὐλήσαμενĒulēsamenWe played the flute ὑμῖνhyminfor you , ΚαὶKaiand οὐκoukvvv ὠρχήσασθεōrchēsastheyou did not dance ; ἘθρηνήσαμενEthrēnēsamenwe sang a dirge , ὑμῖνhyminfor you , ΚαὶKaiand οὐκoukvvv ἐκόψασθεekopsastheyou did not mourn . ’
18ἮλθενĒlthencame γὰρgarFor ἸωάννηςIōannēsJohn μήτεmēteneither ἐσθίωνesthiōneating μήτεmētenor πίνωνpinōndrinking , καὶkaiand λέγουσι·legousisay ΔαιμόνιονDaimoniona demon ! ’ ἔχειechei‘ He has
19ἦλθενēlthencame hoThe ΥἱὸςHuiosSon τοῦtou- ἀνθρώπουanthrōpouof Man ἐσθίωνesthiōneating καὶkaiand πίνωνpinōndrinking , καὶkaiand λέγουσινlegousinthey say , ἸδοὺIdou‘ Look ἄνθρωποςanthrōpos[at this] φάγοςphagosglutton καὶkaiand οἰνοπότηςoinopotēsdrunkard , τελωνῶνtelōnōnof tax collectors φίλοςphilosa friend καὶkaiand ἁμαρτωλῶνhamartōlōnsinners ! ’ καὶkaiBut ἐδικαιώθηedikaiōthēis vindicated - σοφίαsophiawisdom ἀπὸapoby τῶνtōn- τέκνονteknonchildren , αὐτῆςautēsher
20ΤότεToteThen ἤρξατοērxato[Jesus] began ὀνειδίζεινoneidizeinto denounce τὰςtasthe πόλειςpoleiscities ἐνenin αἷςhaiswhich ἐγένοντοegenontohad been performed , αἱhai- πλεῖσταιpleistaimost δυνάμειςdynameismiracles αὐτοῦautouof His ὅτιhotibecause οὐouvvv μετενόησανmetenoēsanthey did not repent .
21ΟὐαίOuai“ Woe σοιsoito you , ΧοραζίνChorazinChorazin ! οὐαίouaiWoe σοιsoito you , ΒηθσαϊδάBēthsaidaBethsaida ! ὅτιhotiFor εἰeiif ἐνenin ΤύρῳTyrōTyre καὶkaiand ΣιδῶνιSidōniSidon , ἐγενήθησανegenēthēsanhad been performed αἱhai[that] δυνάμειςdynameismiracles αἱhai[that] γενόμεναιgenomenaiwere performed ἐνenin ὑμῖνhyminyou πάλαιpalailong ago ἂνan- ἐνenin σάκκῳsakkōsackcloth καὶkaiand σποδῷspodōashes . καθήμεναιkathēmenaisitting μετενόησανmetenoēsanthey would have repented
22πλὴνplēnBut λέγωlegōI tell ὑμῖνhyminyou , ΤύρῳTyrōfor Tyre καὶkaiand ΣιδῶνιSidōniSidon ἀνεκτότερονanektoteronmore bearable ἔσταιestaiit will be ἐνenon ἡμέρᾳhēmera[the] day κρίσεωςkriseōsof judgment ēthan ὑμῖνhyminfor you .
23ΚαὶKaiAnd σύsyyou , Καπερναούμ,kapernaoumCapernaum . ēthan ἕωςheōsto τοῦtou- οὐρανοῦouranouof heaven ὑψωθεῖσαupsotheisawill you be lifted up ἕωςheōsto ᾅδουhadouHades ! καταβιβασθήσῃkatavivasthísicome down ὅτιhotiFor εἰeiif ἐνenin ΣοδόμοιςSodomoisSodom , ἐγενήθησανegenēthēsanhad been performed αἱhai[that] δυνάμειςdynameismiracles αἱhai[that] γενόμεναιgenomenaiwere performed ἐνenin σοίsoiyou ἔμεινανemeinanstayed ἂνanvvv μέχριmechrito τῆςtēsthis σήμερονsēmeronday .
24πλὴνplēnBut λέγωlegōI tell ὑμῖνhyminyou ὅτιhotithat γῇ- ΣοδόμωνSodomōnfor Sodom ἀνεκτότερονanektoteronmore bearable ἔσταιestaiit will be ἐνenon ἡμέρᾳhēmera[the] day κρίσεωςkriseōsof judgment ēthan σοίsoifor you . ”
25ἘνEnAt ἐκείνῳekeinōthat τῷ- καιρῷkairōtime ἀποκριθεὶςapokritheisvvv ho- ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus εἶπενeipendeclared , ἘξομολογοῦμαίExomologoumai“ I praise σοιsoiYou , ΠάτερPaterFather , ΚύριεKyrieLord τοῦtou- οὐρανοῦouranouof heaven καὶkaiand τῆςtēs- γῆςgēsearth , ὅτιhotibecause ἀπέκρυψαςapekrypsasYou have hidden ταῦταtautathese things ἀπὸapofrom σοφῶνsophōn[the] wise καὶkaiand συνετῶνsynetōnlearned , καὶkaiand ἀπεκάλυψαςapekalypsasrevealed αὐτὰautathem νηπίοιςnēpioisto little children .
26ναίnaiYes , ho- ΠατήρPatērFather , ὅτιhotifor οὕτωςhoutōsthis ἐγένετοegenetowas εὐδοκίαeudokiawell-pleasing ἔμπροσθένemprosthenin Your sight σουsou. . . .
27ΠάνταPantaAll things μοιmoito Me παρεδόθηparedothēhave been entrusted ὑπὸhypoby τοῦtou- ΠατρόςPatrosFather . μουmouMy καὶkai- οὐδεὶςoudeisNo one ἐπιγινώσκειepiginōskeiknows τὸνtonthe ΥἱὸνHuionSon εἰeiexcept μὴ. . . hothe ΠατήρPatērFather , οὐδὲoude[and] τὸνtonthe ΠατέραPateraFather τιςtis[no one] ἐπιγινώσκειepiginōskeiknows εἰeiexcept μὴ. . . hothe ΥἱὸςHuiosSon καὶkaiand those to whom ἐὰνean. . . βούληταιboulētaichooses hothe ΥἱὸςHuiosSon ἀποκαλύψαιapokalypsaito reveal [Him] .
28ΔεῦτεDeuteCome πρόςprosto μεmeMe , πάντεςpantesall οἱhoiyou who κοπιῶντεςkopiōntesare weary καὶkaiand πεφορτισμένοιpephortismenoiburdened , κἀγὼkagōand I ἀναπαύσωanapausōwill give you rest . ὑμᾶςhymasvvv
29ἄρατεarateTake τὸνton- ζυγόνzygonyoke μουmouMy ἐφ’eph’upon ὑμᾶςhymasyou καὶkaiand μάθετεmathetelearn ἀπ’ap’from ἐμοῦemouMe ; ὅτιhotifor πρᾷόςpraosgentle εἰμιeimiI am καὶkaiand ταπεινὸςtapeinoshumble τῇ[in] καρδίᾳkardiaheart , καὶkaiand εὑρήσετεheurēseteyou will find ἀνάπαυσινanapausinrest ταῖςtais[for] ψυχαῖςpsychaissouls . ὑμῶνhymōnyour
30ho- γὰρgarFor ζυγόςzygosyoke μουmouMy χρηστὸςchrēstosis easy καὶkaiand τὸto- φορτίονphortionburden μουmouMy ἐλαφρόνelaphronlight . ” ἐστινestinis
