1ΠερὶPeriabout δὲdebut τῶνtōn[food] εἰδωλοθύτωνeidōlothytōnsacrificed to idols : οἴδαμενoidamenWe know ὅτιhotithat πάντεςpantesvvv γνῶσινgnōsinknowledge . ἔχομενechomenwe all have
2ἡhē- γνῶσιςgnōsisKnowledge φυσιοῖphysioipuffs up , ἡhē- δὲdebut ἀγάπηagapēlove οἰκοδομεῖoikodomeibuilds up . εἴei- δὲdebut τιςtisThe one who δοκεῖdokeithinks εἰδέναιeidenaithat you know τιtisomething οὐδέπωoudepōnot yet οὐδὲνouden[is] nothing at all ἔγνωκεegnokeunderstood καθὼςkathōsas δεῖdeihe ought γνῶναιgnōnaito know .
3εἰei- δέdeBut τιςtisthe one who ἀγαπᾷagapaloves τὸνton- ΘεόνTheonGod οὗτοςhoutos- ἔγνωσταιegnōstaiis known ὑπ’hyp’by αὐτοῦautou[God] .
4ΠερὶPeriabout τῆςtēs- βρώσεωςbrōseōseating οὖνounSo τῶνtōn- εἰδωλοθύτωνeidōlothytōnfood sacrificed to idols : οἴδαμενoidamenWe know ὅτιhotithat οὐδὲνouden[is] nothing at all εἴδωλονeidōlonan idol ἐνenin κόσμῳkosmō[the] world , καὶkaiand ὅτιhotithat οὐδεὶςoudeis[there is] no ΘεὸςTheosGod ἕτεροςheterosanother εἰeibut μὴmē. . . εἷςheisone .
5καὶkaieven γὰρgarFor εἴπερeiperif εἰσὶeisiare λεγόμενοιlegomenoiso-called θεοὶtheoigods , εἴτεeitewhether ἐνenin οὐρανῷouranōheaven εἴτεeiteor ἐπὶepion τῆςtēs- γῆςgēsearth ὥσπερhōsper(as εἰσὶeisiare θεοὶtheoigods πολλοὶpolloimany [ so-called ] καὶkaiand κύριοιkyrioilords ), πολλοίpolloi-
6ἀλλ’all’yet ἡμῖνhēminfor us εἷςheis[ there is but ] one ΘεὸςTheosGod , ὁhothe ΠατήρPatērFather , ἐξexfrom οὗhouwhom τὰtathings [came] πάνταpantaall καὶkaiand ἡμεῖςhēmeiswe [exist] . εἷςheisone αὐτόνauton[whom] καὶkaiAnd [ there is but ] εἷςheisone ΚύριοςKyriosLord , ἸησοῦςIēsousJesus ΧριστόςChristosChrist , δι’di’through οὗhouwhom τὰtathings [came] πάνταpantaall καὶkaiand ἡμεῖςhēmeiswe [exist] . δι’di’through αὐτοῦautou[whom]
7Ἀλλ’All’But οὐκouknot ἐνen[has] πᾶσινpasineveryone ἡhēthis γνῶσιςgnōsisknowledge . τινὲςtinesSome δὲde- τῇtē[people] συνειδήσειsyneidēseiconscience τοῦtou- εἰδώλουeidōlouto idols ἕωςheōs. . . ἄρτιarti. . . ὡςhōsas if εἰδωλόθυτονeidōlothytonit were sacrificed to an idol . ἐσθίουσι,esthiousikeep on eating καὶkaiAnd ἡhē- συνείδησιςsyneidēsisconscience αὐτῶνautōn[since] their ἀσθενὴςasthenēsweak , οὖσαousais μολύνεταιmolynetaiit is defiled .
8βρῶμαbrōmafood δὲdeBut ἡμᾶςhēmas. . . οὐouvvv παρίστησιparistesiHe will at once put at My disposal τῷtōto ΘεῷTheōGod : οὔτεoute- γάρgarFor ἐὰνeanif φάγωμενphagōmenwe do . περισσεύομενperisseuomen[better] οὔτεoute[and] ἐὰνeanif ‹μὴ›mēno φάγωμενphagōmenwe do not eat , ὑστερούμεθαhysteroumethaWe are no worse
9ΒλέπετεBlepeteBe careful , δὲdehowever , μήπωςmeposno-how ἡhē- ἐξουσίαexousiafreedom ὑμῶνhymōnyour αὕτηhautē[that] πρόσκομμαproskommaa stumbling block γένηταιgenētaidoes not become τοῖςtoisto the ἀσθενοῦσιν.asthenousinweak
10ἐὰνeanif γάρgarFor τιςtissomeone ἴδῃidēsees σὲseyou τὸνtonwho ἔχονταechontavvv γνῶσινgnōsinare well informed ἐνenin εἰδωλείῳeidōleiōan idol’s temple , κατακείμενονkatakeimenoneating οὐχὶouchi{will he} not ἡhē- συνείδησιςsyneidēsisconscience αὐτοῦautou[with] ἀσθενοῦςasthenousa weak ὄντοςontosbe οἰκοδομηθήσεταιoikodomēthēsetaiencouraged εἰςeisto τὸto- τὰta[food] εἰδωλόθυταeidōlothytasacrificed to idols ? ἐσθίεινesthieineat
11καὶkaiand ἀπολεῖταιapoleitaiwill be lost . ” ὁho- ἀσθενῶνasthenōnweak ἀδελφὸςadelphosbrother , ἐπὶepion τῇtē[people] σὲseyou γνώσειgnōseiknowledge . δι’di’for ὃνhonwhom ΧριστὸςChristosChrist ἀπέθανενapethanendied ,
12οὕτωhoutōso δὲde- ἁμαρτάνοντεςhamartanontesBy sinning εἰςeisagainst τοὺςtous[your] ἀδελφοὺςadelphousbrothers καὶkaiand τύπτοντεςtyptonteswounding αὐτῶνautōntheir τὴνtēn- συνείδησινsyneidēsinconscience , ἀσθενοῦσανasthenousanweak εἰςeisagainst ΧριστὸνChristonChrist . ἁμαρτάνετεhamartaneteyou sin
13ΔιόπερDioperTherefore , εἰeiif βρῶμαbrōma[what I eat] σκανδαλίζειskandalizeicauses τὸνton- ἀδελφόνadelphonbrother {to stumble} , μουmoumy οὐouvvv μὴmēvvv φάγωphagōI will never eat κρέαkreameat εἰςeisvvv τὸνtonvvv αἰῶναaiōna[again] , ἵναhinaso that μὴmēvvv τὸνton- ἀδελφόνadelphon[him] {to stumble} . μουmouvvv σκανδαλίσωskandalisōI will not cause
