1ἪĒ- ἀγνοεῖτεagnoeiteDo you not know , ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers γινώσκουσίginōskousiknow γὰρgar(for νόμονnomon[the] law) , λαλῶlalōI am speaking ὅτιhotithat ὁhothe νόμοςnomoslaw κυριεύειkyrieueihas authority over τοῦtou- ἀνθρώπουanthrōpoua man ἐφ’eph’only ὅσονhosonas long as χρόνονchronon. . . ζῇzēhe lives ?
2ἡhēFor instance γὰρgar. . . , ὕπανδροςhypandrosa married γυνὴgynēwoman τῷtōto [her] ζῶντιzōntias long as he lives . ἀνδρὶandrihusband δέδεταιdedetaiis bound νόμῳnomōby law ἐὰνeanif δὲdeBut ἀποθάνῃapothanēdies , ὁho[her] ἀνήρanērhusband κατήργηταιkatērgētaishe is released ἀπὸapofrom τοῦtouthe νόμουnomoulaw τοῦtouof ἀνδρόςandros[marriage] .
3ἄραarathen , οὖνounSo ζῶντοςzōntosis [still] alive , τοῦtou- ἀνδρὸςandros[while her] husband μοιχαλὶςmoichalisan adulteress ; χρηματίσειchrēmatiseishe is called ἐὰνeanif γένηταιgenētaishe is [joined] ἀνδρὶandriman ἑτέρῳheterōto another ἐὰνeanif δὲdebut ἀποθάνῃapothanēdies , ὁho[her] ἀνήρanērhusband ἐλευθέραeleutherafree ἐστὶνestinshe is ἀπὸapofrom τοῦtouthat νόμουnomoulaw τοῦtou- μὴmēnot εἶναιeinaiis αὐτὴνautēn[and] μοιχαλίδαmoichalidaan adulteress , γενομένηνgenomenēn[even if she marries] ἀνδρὶandriman . ἑτέρῳheterōanother
4ὭστεHōsteTherefore , ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers , μουmoumy καὶkaialso ὑμεῖςhymeisyou ἐθανατώθητεethanatōthētedied τῷtōto the νόμῳnomōlaw διὰdiathrough τοῦtouthe σώματοςsōmatosbody τοῦtou- ΧριστοῦChristouof Christ , εἰςeisthat τὸto- γενέσθαιgenesthaimight belong ὑμᾶςhymasyou ἑτέρῳheterōto another , τῷtōto [Him who] ἐκekfrom νεκρῶνnekrōn[the] dead , ἐγερθέντιegerthentiwas raised ἵναhinain order that καρποφορήσωμενkarpophorēsōmenwe might bear fruit τῷtō- ΘεῷTheōto God .
5ὅτεhotewhen γὰρgarFor ἦμενēmenwe [lived] ἐνenaccording to τῇtēthe σαρκίsarkiflesh , τὰtathe παθήματαpathēmatapassions τῶνtōn- ἁμαρτιῶνhamartiōnsinful τὰta- διὰdia[aroused] by τοῦtouthe νόμουnomoulaw ἐνηργεῖτοenērgeitowere at work ἐνenin τοῖςtois- μέλεσινmelesinbodies , ἡμῶνhēmōnour εἰςeisvvv τὸtovvv καρποφορῆσαιkarpophorēsaibearing fruit τῷtō- θανάτῳthanatōfor death .
6νυνὶnyninow , δὲdeBut κατηργήθημενkatērgēthēmenwe have been released ἀπὸapofrom τοῦtouthe νόμουnomoulaw , ἀποθανόντεςapothanonteshaving died ἐνento ᾧhōwhat κατειχόμεθαkateichomethabound us , ὥστεhōsteso that δουλεύεινdouleueinserve ἡμᾶςhēmaswe ἐνenin καινότητιkainotētithe new way πνεύματοςpneumatosof the Spirit , καὶkaiand οὐounot παλαιότητιpalaiotētiin the old way γράμματοςgrammatosof the written code .
7ΤίTiWhat οὖνounthen ἐροῦμενeroumenshall we say ? ὁho[Is] the νόμοςnomoslaw ἁμαρτίαhamartiasin ? μὴmēvvv γένοιτοgenoitoCertainly not ! ἀλλὰallaIndeed , τὴνtēn- ἁμαρτίανhamartiansin οὐκoukvvv ἔγνωνegnōnI would not have been mindful of εἰeiif μὴmēnot διὰdiafor νόμουnomouthe law . τήνtēn- τεtevvv γὰρgarFor ἐπιθυμίανepithymiancoveting οὐκoukvvv ᾔδεινēdeinI would not have been aware of εἰeiif μὴmē{had} not ὁhothe νόμοςnomoslaw ἔλεγενelegensaid , ΟὐκOukvvv ἐπιθυμήσειςepithymēseis“ Do not covet .”
8ἀφορμὴνaphormēn[its] opportunity δὲdeBut λαβοῦσαlabousaseizing ἡhē- ἁμαρτίαhamartiasin , διὰdiathrough τῆςtēsthe ἐντολῆςentolēscommandment , κατειργάσατοkateirgasatoproduced ἐνenin ἐμοὶemoime πᾶσανpasanevery kind ἐπιθυμίανepithymianof covetous desire . χωρὶςchōrisapart from γὰρgarFor νόμουnomou[the] law , ἁμαρτίαhamartiasin νεκράnekra[is] dead .
9ἘγὼEgōI δὲde- ἔζωνezōnwas alive χωρὶςchōrisapart from νόμουnomou[the] law ; ποτέpoteOnce ἐλθούσηςelthousēscame , δὲdebut [when] τῆςtēsthe ἐντολῆςentolēscommandment ἡhē- ἁμαρτίαhamartiasin ἀνέζησενanezēsensprang to life
10ἐγὼegōI δὲdeand ἀπέθανονapethanondied . καὶkaiSo εὑρέθηheurethēdiscovered that μοιmoiI ἡhēvery ἐντολὴentolēcommandment ἡhēthat was εἰςeismeant to bring ζωὴνzōēnlife αὕτηhautēthe εἰςeismeant to bring θάνατονthanatondeath .
11ἡhē- γὰρgarFor ἁμαρτίαhamartiasin , ἀφορμὴνaphormēn[its] opportunity λαβοῦσαlabousaseizing διὰdiathrough τῆςtēsthe ἐντολῆςentolēscommandment , ἐξηπάτησέexepatesedeceived μεmeme καὶkaiand δι’di’through αὐτῆςautēs[the commandment] ἀπέκτεινενapekteinenput [me] to death .
12ὭστεHōsteSo ὁhothe μὲνmenthen , νόμοςnomoslaw [is] ἅγιοςhagiosholy , καὶkaiand ἡhēthe ἐντολὴentolēcommandment [is] ἁγίαhagiaholy , καὶkai- δικαίαdikaiarighteous , καὶkaiand ἀγαθήagathēgood .
13ΤὸTo{Did} that which οὖνounthen , ἀγαθὸνagathon[is] good , ἐμοὶemoito me ? γέγονεgegonehas been done , θάνατοςthanatosdeath μὴmēvvv γένοιτοgenoitoCertainly not ! ἀλλὰallaBut ἡhē- ἁμαρτίαhamartiasin ἵναhinain order that φανῇphanēmight be exposed as ἁμαρτίαhamartiasin , διὰdiathrough τοῦtouwhat [was] ἀγαθοῦagathougood , μοιmoiin me κατεργαζομένηkatergazomenēit produced θάνατονthanatondeath ἵναhinaso that γένηταιgenētaimight become καθ’kath’vvv ὑπερβολὴνhyperbolēnutterly ἁμαρτωλὸςhamartōlossinful . ἡhē- ἁμαρτίαhamartiasin διὰdiathrough τῆςtēsthe ἐντολῆςentolēscommandment
14ΟἴδαμενOidamenWe know γὰρgar- ὅτιhotithat ὁho- νόμοςnomos[the] law πνευματικόςpneumatikosspiritual ; ἐστινestinis ἐγὼegōI δὲdebut σαρκικόςsarkikosunspiritual , εἰμιeimiam πεπραμένοςpepramenossold as a slave ὑπὸhypoto τὴνtēn- ἁμαρτίανhamartiansin .
15ὃhowhat γὰρgarFor κατεργάζομαιkatergazomaiI do . οὐouvvv γινώσκωginōskōI do not understand οὐouvvv γὰρgar- ὃhowhat θέλωthelōI want [to do] , τοῦτοtouto- πράσσωprassōI do not do . ἀλλ’all’But ὃhowhat μισῶmisōI hate , τοῦτοtouto- ποιῶpoiōI do .
16εἰeiif δὲdeAnd ὃhowhat οὐouvvv θέλωthelōI do not want [to do] , τοῦτοtouto- ποιῶpoiōI do σύμφημιsymphēmiI admit τῷtōthe νόμῳnomōlaw ὅτιhotithat καλόςkalos[is] good .
17νυνὶnyniIn that case , δὲde- οὐκέτιouketi{it is} no longer ἐγὼegōI κατεργάζομαιkatergazomaiwho do αὐτὸautoit , ἀλλ’all’But ἡhē- οἰκοῦσα*oikousaliving ἐνenin ἐμοὶemoime [ that does it ] . ἁμαρτίαhamartiasin
18ΟἶδαOidaI know γὰρgar- ὅτιhotithat οὐκouknothing οἰκεῖoikeilives ἐνenin ἐμοίemoime , τοῦτ’tout’that ἔστινestinis , ἐνenin τῇtē- σαρκίsarkiflesh ; μουmoumy ἀγαθόνagathongood τὸtothe γὰρgarfor θέλεινtheleindesire παράκειταίparakeitaihave μοιmoiI τὸtothe δὲdebut κατεργάζεσθαιkatergazesthaito do τὸtowhat is καλὸνkalongood , οὐχouchvvv ΕὑρίσκωHeuriskōI have discovered
19οὐouvvv γὰρgarFor ὃho- θέλωthelōI want [to do] . ποιῶpoiōI do not do ἀγαθόνagathon[the] good ἀλλ’all’But ὃhowhat οὐouvvv θέλωthelōI want [to do] , κακὸνkakon[the] evil τοῦτοtouto- πράσσωprassōI keep on doing
20εἰeiif δὲdeAnd ὃho- οὐouvvv θέλωthelōI do not want [to do] . ἐγὼegōI τοῦτοtouto- ποιῶpoiōdo οὐκέτιouketi[it is] no longer ἐγὼegōI κατεργάζομαιkatergazomaiwho do αὐτὸautoit , ἀλλ’all’But ἡhē- οἰκοῦσα*oikousaliving ἐνenin ἐμοὶemoime [ that does it ] . ἁμαρτίαhamartiasin
21ΕὑρίσκωHeuriskōI have discovered ἄραaraSo τὸνton[this is] the νόμονnomonprinciple τῷtō- : θέλοντιthelontiwant ἐμοὶemoiWhen I ποιεῖνpoieinto do τὸto- καλὸνkalongood , ὅτιhoti- ἐμοὶemoime . τὸto- κακὸνkakonevil παράκειταιparakeitaiis right there with
22συνήδομαιsynēdomaiI delight γὰρgarFor τὸto- νόμῳnomōlaw . τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod’s κατὰkata- τὸνtonin [my] ἔσωesōinner ἄνθρωπονanthrōponbeing
23βλέπωblepōI see δὲdeBut ἕτερονheteronanother νόμονnomonlaw [ at work ] ἐνenin τοῖςtois- μέλεσίmelesibodies , μουmoumy ἀντιστρατευόμενονantistrateuomenonwarring against τῷtōthe νόμῳnomōlaw τοῦtou- νοόςnoosmind μουmouof my καὶkaiand αἰχμαλωτίζοντάaichmalōtizontaholding me captive μεmevvv ἐνento τῷtōthe νόμῳnomōlaw τῆςtēs- ἁμαρτίαςhamartiasof sin τῷtō- ὄντιontithat dwells ἐνenwithin τοῖςtoisvvv μέλεσίmelesibodies , μουmouvvv
24ΤαλαίπωροςTalaipōros[What a] wretched ἐγὼegōI am ! ἄνθρωποςanthrōposman τίςtisWho μεmeme ῥύσεταιrhysetaiwill rescue ἐκekfrom τοῦtou- σώματοςsōmatosbody τοῦtou- θανάτουthanatouof death ? τούτουtoutouthis
25εὐχαριστῶeucharistōI thank τῷtōto ΘεῷTheōGod , διὰdiathrough ἸησοῦIēsouJesus ΧριστοῦChristouChrist τοῦtou- ΚυρίουKyriouLord ! ἡμῶνhēmōnour ἌραArathen , οὖνounSo αὐτὸςautos- ἐγὼegōI τῷtōwith [my] μὲνmen- νοῒnoimind δουλεύωdouleuōserve νόμῳnomō[the] law ΘεοῦTheouof God , τῇtē[with my] δὲdebut σαρκὶsarkiflesh νόμῳnomō[I serve the] law ἁμαρτίαςhamartiasof sin .
