1ΠερὶPeriabout δέdeBut τῶνtōn- χρόνωνchronōntimes καὶkaiand τῶνtōn- καιρῶνkairōnseasons , ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers , οὐou{we do} not χρείανchreianneed ἔχετεechete- ὑμῖνhyminto you . γράφεσθαιgraphesthaito write
2αὐτοὶautoiyou γὰρgarFor ἀκριβῶςakribōs{are} fully οἴδατεoidateaware ὅτιhotithat ἡhē- ἡμέραhēmeraday ΚυρίουKyriouof [the] Lord ὡςhōslike κλέπτηςkleptēsa thief ἐνenin νυκτὶnykti[the] night . οὕτωςhoutōsvvv ἔρχεταιerchetaiwill come
3ὅτανhotanWhile λέγωσινlegōsin[people] are saying , ΕἰρήνηEirēnē“ Peace καὶkaiand ἀσφάλειαasphaleiasecurity , ” τότεtote- αἰφνίδιοςaiphnidiossuddenly , αὐτοῖςautoisupon them ἐφίσταται*ephistataiwill come ὄλεθροςolethrosdestruction ὥσπερhōsperlike ἡhē- ὠδὶνōdinlabor pains τῇtēon ἐνen. . . γαστρὶgastri. . . , ἐχούσῃechousēa pregnant woman καὶkaiand οὐouvvv μὴmēvvv ἐκφύγωσινekphygōsinthey will not escape .
4ὙμεῖςHymeisyou , δέdeBut ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers , οὐκouknot ἐστὲesteare ἐνenin σκότειskotei[the] darkness ἵναhinaso that ἡhē[this] ἡμέραhēmeraday ὑμᾶςhymasyou ὡςhōslike κλέπτηςkleptēsa thief . καταλάβῃkatalabēshould overtake
5πάντεςpantesall ὑμεῖςhymeisyou υἱοὶhuioisons φωτόςphōtosof [the] light ἐστεesteare καὶkaiand υἱοὶhuioisons ἡμέραςhēmerasof [the] day ; ΟὐκOuk. . . ἐσμὲνesmenwe do not belong νυκτὸςnyktosto [the] night οὐδὲoude[or] σκότουςskotousto [the] darkness .
6ἄραaraSo οὖνounthen , μὴmēvvv καθεύδωμενkatheudōmenlet us not sleep ὡςhōsas καὶkaiand οἱhoithose who λοιποίloipoiothers [do] , ἀλλὰallabut γρηγορῶμενgrēgorōmenlet us remain awake καὶkaiand νήφωμενnēphōmensober .
7οἱhoithose who γὰρgarFor καθεύδοντεςkatheudontessleep , νυκτὸςnyktosat night ; καθεύδουσι,katheudousisleep καὶkaiand οἱhoithose who μεθυσκόμενοιmethyskomenoiget drunk , νυκτὸςnyktosat night . μεθύουσινmethyousinget drunk
8ἡμεῖςhēmeiswe δὲdeBut [since] ἡμέραςhēmeras[the] day , ὄντεςontesbelong to νήφωμενnēphōmenlet us be sober , ἐνδυσάμενοιendysamenoiputting on θώρακαthōraka[the] breastplate πίστεωςpisteōsof faith καὶkaiand ἀγάπηςagapēslove , καὶkaiand περικεφαλαίανperikephalaian[the] helmet ἐλπίδαelpida[of our] hope σωτηρίαςsōtēriasof salvation .
9ὅτιhotiFor οὐκoukvvv ἔθετοethetohas not appointed ἡμᾶςhēmasus ὁho- ΘεὸςTheosGod εἰςeisto ὀργὴνorgēn[suffer] wrath , ἀλλ’all’Instead , εἰςeisto περιποίησινperipoiēsinobtain σωτηρίαςsōtēriassalvation διὰdiathrough τοῦtou- ΚυρίουKyriouLord ἡμῶνhēmōnour ἸησοῦIēsouJesus ΧριστοῦChristouChrist .
10τοῦtouHe ἀποθανόντοςapothanontosdied ὑπὲρhyperabove ἡμῶνhēmōnus ἵναhinaso that , εἴτεeitewhether γρηγορῶμενgrēgorōmenwe are awake εἴτεeiteor καθεύδωμενkatheudōmenasleep , ἅμαhamatogether σὺνsynwith αὐτῷautōHim . ζήσωμενzēsōmenwe may live
11ΔιὸDioTherefore παρακαλεῖτεparakaleiteencourage ἀλλήλουςallēlous- καὶkaiand οἰκοδομεῖτεoikodomeitebuild εἷςheisone τὸνton- ἕναhenaanother {up} , καθὼςkathōsjust as καὶkaivvv ποιεῖτεpoieiteyou are already doing .
12ἘρωτῶμενErōtōmenwe ask δὲdeBut ὑμᾶςhymasyou , ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers , εἰδέναιeidenaito acknowledge τοὺςtousthose who κοπιῶνταςkopiōntaswork diligently ἐνenamong ὑμῖνhyminyou , καὶkai- προϊσταμένουςproistamenous[who] preside ὑμῶνhymōnover you ἐνenin ΚυρίῳKyriō[the] Lord καὶkaiand νουθετοῦνταςnouthetountasgive you instruction ὑμᾶςhymas. . . .
13καὶkai- ἡγεῖσθαιhēgeisthaihold αὐτοὺςautousthem ὑπερεκπερισσοῦ*hyperekperissouin highest {regard} ἐνenIn ἀγάπῃagapēlove , διὰdiabecause of τὸto- ἔργονergonwork . αὐτῶνautōntheir εἰρηνεύετεeirēneueteLive in peace ἐνenwith αὐτοῖςautoisupon them
14ΠαρακαλοῦμενParakaloumenwe urge δὲdeAnd ὑμᾶςhymasyou , ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers , νουθετεῖτεnoutheteiteto admonish τοὺςtousthe ἀτάκτουςataktousunruly , παραμυθεῖσθεparamytheistheencourage τοὺςtousthe ὀλιγοψύχουςoligopsychousfainthearted , ἀντέχεσθεantechesthehelp τῶνtōnthe ἀσθενῶνasthenōnweak , μακροθυμεῖτεmakrothymeite[and] be patient πρὸςproswith πάνταςpantaseveryone .
15ὉρᾶτεHorateMake sure that μήmēno τιςtisone κακὸνkakonevil ἀντὶantifor κακοῦkakouevil . τινιtini- ἀποδῷapodōrepays ἀλλὰalla- πάντοτεpantoteAlways τὸtowhat [is] ἀγαθὸνagathongood διώκετεdiōketepursue καὶkai- εἰςeisfor ἀλλήλουςallēlousone another καὶkaiand εἰςeisfor πάνταςpantasall [people] .
18ἐνenin παντὶpantievery circumstance , εὐχαριστεῖτεeucharisteiteGive thanks τοῦτοtoutothis [is] γὰρgarfor θέλημαthelēmawill ΘεοῦTheouGod’s ἐνenin ΧριστῷChristōChrist ἸησοῦIēsouJesus . εἰςeisfor ὑμᾶςhymasyou
21πάνταpantaall things . δὲdebut δοκιμάζετεdokimazetetest τὸtoto what [is] καλὸνkalongood . κατέχετεkatecheteHold fast
23ΑὐτὸςAutosHimself δὲdeNow ὁho{may} the ΘεὸςTheosGod τῆςtēs- εἰρήνηςeirēnēsof peace ἁγιάσαιhagiasaisanctify ὑμᾶςhymasyou ὁλοτελεῖςholoteleiscompletely , καὶkaiand ὁλόκληρονholoklēronentire ὑμῶνhymōn{may} your τὸto- πνεῦμαpneumaspirit , καὶkai- ἡhē- ψυχὴpsychēsoul , καὶkaiand τὸto- σῶμαsōmabody ἀμέμπτωςamemptōsblameless ἐνenat τῇtēthe παρουσίᾳparousiacoming τοῦtou- ΚυρίουKyriouLord ἡμῶνhēmōnof our ἸησοῦIēsouJesus ΧριστοῦChristouChrist . τηρηθείηtērētheiēbe kept
24πιστὸςpistos[is] faithful , ὁhoThe [One who] καλῶνkalōncalls ὑμᾶςhymasyou ὃςhos[He] καὶkaiand ποιήσειpoiēseiwill do [it] .
26ἈσπάσασθεAspasastheGreet τοὺςtousthe ἀδελφοὺςadelphousbrothers πάνταςpantasall ἐνenwith φιλήματιphilēmatikiss . ἁγίῳhagiōa holy
27ὁρκίζωhorkizōI beg ὑμᾶςhymasyou τὸνton[before] the ΚύριονKyrionLord ἀναγνωσθῆναιanagnōsthēnairead τὴνtēn[to have this] ἐπιστολὴνepistolēnletter πᾶσιpasiall τοῖςtoisthe ἀδελφοῖςadelphoisbrothers .
28ἩHēThe χάριςcharisgrace τοῦtou- ΚυρίουKyriouLord ἡμῶνhēmōnof our ἸησοῦIēsouJesus ΧριστοῦChristouChrist μεθ’meth’[be] with ὑμῶνhymōnyou . ἀμὴνamēnTruly
