4δεσμεύουσινdesmeuousinThey tie up γὰρgarfor φορτίαphortialoads βαρέαbareaheavy , [καὶkai- ἐπιτιθέασινepititheasinlay [them] ἐπὶepion τοὺςtous- ὤμουςōmousshoulders , τῶνtōn- ἀνθρώπωνanthrōpōnmen’s τῷvvv δὲdebut δακτύλῳdaktylōto lift a finger αὐτῶνautōnvvv οὐouvvv θέλουσιthelousiare not willing κινῆσαιkinēsaito move αὐτάautathem .

8ὙμεῖςHymeisyou δὲdeBut μὴvvv κληθῆτεklēthēteare not to be called ῬαββίRhabbi‘ Rabbi , ’ εἷςheisone γάρgarfor ὑμῶνhymōnyou ἐστινestin[have] ho- διδάσκαλοςdidaskalosTeacher , ho- ΧριστόςChristosChrist . πάντεςpantesall δὲdeand ὑμεῖςhymeisyou ἀδελφοίadelphoibrothers . ἐστεesteare
9καὶkaiAnd πατέραpaterafather , μὴ. . . καλέσητεkalesētedo not call anyone ὑμῶνhymōnyour ἐπὶepion τῆςtēs- γῆςgēsearth εἷςheisone γάρgarfor ἐστινestin[have] ho- ΠατὴρPatērFather , ὑμῶνhymōnyou ho- ἐνenin τοῖςtois- οὐρανοῖςouranoisheaven ,
10μηδὲmēdeNor κληθῆτεklēthēteare you to be called καθηγηταίkathēgētaiinstructors , εἷςheisone γάρgarfor ὑμῶνhymōnyou ἐστινestin[have] ho- καθηγητὴςkathēgētēsInstructor , hothe ΧριστόςChristosChrist .
11hothe δὲde- μείζωνmeizōngreatest ὑμῶνhymōnamong you ἔσταιestaishall be ὑμῶνhymōnyour διάκονοςdiakonosservant .
12ὍστιςHostiswhoever δὲdeFor ὑψώσειhypsōseiexalts ἑαυτὸνheautonhimself ταπεινωθήσεταιtapeinōthēsetaiwill be humbled , καὶkaiand ὅστιςhostiswhoever ταπεινώσειtapeinōseihumbles ἑαυτὸνheautonhimself ὑψωθήσεταιhypsōthēsetaiwill be exalted .
13ΟὐαὶOuaiWoe δὲde- ὑμῖνhyminto you , γραμματεῖςgrammateisscribes καὶkaiand ΦαρισαῖοιPharisaioiPharisees , ὑποκριταίhypokritaiyou hypocrites ! ὅτιhoti- κατεσθίετεkatesthieteyou devour τὰςtasthe οἰκίαςoikiasvvv τῶνtōn- χηρῶνchērōnwidows καὶkaiand προφάσειprophaseifor a show μακρὰmakramake lengthy prayers . ΠροσευχόμενοιProseuchomenoi[when] you pray , ΔιὰDiaBecause of τοῦτοtoutothis λήψεσθεlepsestheyou will receive περισσότερονperissoteronmore κρίμαkrima[the] sentence
14ΟὐαὶOuaiWoe ὑμῖνhyminto you , γραμματεῖςgrammateisscribes καὶkaiand ΦαρισαῖοιPharisaioiPharisees , ὑποκριταίhypokritaiyou hypocrites ! ὅτιhoti- κλείετεkleieteYou shut τὴνtēnthe βασιλείανbasileiankingdom τῶνtōnof οὐρανῶνouranōnheaven ἔμπροσθενemprosthenin men’s faces τῶνtōn. . . ἀνθρώπωνanthrōpōn. . . . ὑμεῖςhymeisYou yourselves γὰρgar- οὐκoukvvv εἰσέρχεσθεeiserchesthedo not enter , οὐδὲoudenor τοὺςtousthose who εἰσερχομένουςeiserchomenouswish to enter . ἀφίετεaphietewill you let εἰσελθεῖνeiseltheinin
15ΟὐαὶOuaiWoe ὑμῖνhyminto you , γραμματεῖςgrammateisscribes καὶkaiand ΦαρισαῖοιPharisaioiPharisees , ὑποκριταίhypokritaiyou hypocrites ! ὅτιhoti- περιάγετεperiageteYou traverse τὴνtēn- θάλασσανthalassansea καὶkaiand τὴνtēn- ξηρὰνxēran[land] ποιῆσαιpoiēsaito win ἕναhenaa single προσήλυτονprosēlytonconvert , καὶkaiand ὅτανhotanwhen γένηταιgenētaihe becomes [one] , ποιεῖτεpoieiteyou make αὐτὸνautonhim υἱὸνhuiona son γεέννηςgeennēsof hell διπλότερονdiploterontwice as much ὑμῶνhymōnas you are .
16ΟὐαὶOuaiWoe ὑμῖνhyminto you , ὁδηγοὶhodēgoiguides ! τυφλοὶtyphloiblind οἱhoi[You] λέγοντεςlegontessay , ὋςHos‘ If anyone ἂνan. . . ὀμόσῃomosēswears ἐνenby τῷthe ναῷnaōtemple , οὐδένoudennothing ; ἐστινestinit means ὃςhosif anyone δ’d’but ἂνan. . . ὀμόσῃomosēswears ἐνenby τῷthe χρυσῷchrysōgold τοῦtouof the ναοῦnaoutemple , ὀφείλειopheileihe is bound by his oath . ’
17μωροὶmōroifools ! καὶkai- τυφλοίtyphloi[You] blind τίςtisWhich γὰρgar- μείζωνmeizōngreater : ἐστίνestinis hothe χρυσὸςchrysosgold , ēor hothe ναὸςnaostemple ho- ἁγιάζονhagiazonthat makes it sacred τὸνton. . . χρυσόνchryson. . . ?
18καίkaiAnd [you say] , ὋςHos‘ If anyone ἂνan. . . ὀμόσῃomosēswears ἐνenby τῷthe θυσιαστηρίῳthysiastēriōaltar , οὐδένoudennothing ; ἐστινestinit means ὃςhosif anyone δ’d’but ἂνan. . . ὀμόσῃomosēswears ἐνenby τῷthe δώρῳdōrōgift τῷ- ἐπάνωepanōon αὐτοῦautouit , ὀφείλειopheileihe is bound by his oath . ’
19μωροὶmōroifools ! καὶkai- τυφλοίtyphloi[You] blind τίtiWhich γὰρgar- μεῖζονmeizon[is] greater : τὸtothe δῶρονdōrongift , ēor τὸtothe θυσιαστήριονthysiastērionaltar τὸto- ἁγιάζονhagiazonthat makes it sacred τὸto. . . δῶρονdōron. . . ?
20hohe who οὖνounSo then , ὀμόσαςomosasswears ἐνenby τῷthe θυσιαστηρίῳthysiastēriōaltar ὀμνύειomnyeiswears ἐνenby αὐτῷautōit καὶkaiand ἐνenby πᾶσιpasieverything τοῖςtois- ἐπάνωepanōon αὐτοῦautouit .
21καὶkaiAnd hohe who ὀμόσαςomosasswears ἐνenby τῷthe ναῷnaōtemple ὀμνύειomnyeiswears ἐνenby αὐτῷautōit καὶkaiand ἐνenby τῷthe [One] κατοικήσαντιkatoikesantiwho dwells αὐτόνautonin it .
22καὶkaiAnd hohe who ὀμόσαςomosasswears ἐνenby τῷ- οὐρανῷouranōheaven ὀμνύειomnyeiswears ἐνenby τῷ- θρόνῳthronōthrone τοῦtou- ΘεοῦTheouGod’s καὶkaiand ἐνenby τῷthe [One] καθημένῳkathēmenōwho sits ἐπάνωepanōon αὐτοῦautouit .
23ΟὐαὶOuaiWoe ὑμῖνhyminto you , γραμματεῖςgrammateisscribes καὶkaiand ΦαρισαῖοιPharisaioiPharisees , ὑποκριταίhypokritaiyou hypocrites ! ὅτιhoti- ἀποδεκατοῦτεapodekatouteYou pay tithes of τὸto- ἡδύοσμονhēdyosmonmint , καὶkai- τὸto- ἄνηθονanēthondill , καὶkaiand τὸto- κύμινονkyminoncumin . καὶkaiBut ἀφήκατεaphēkateyou have disregarded τὰtathe βαρύτεραbaryteraweightier [matters] τοῦtouof the νόμουnomoulaw : τὴνtēn- κρίσινkrisinjustice , καὶkai- τὸνton- ἔλεονeleonmercy καὶkaiand τὴνtēn- πίστινpistinfaithfulness . ταῦταtautathe latter , δὲdewithout ἔδειedeiYou should have ποιῆσαιpoiēsaipracticed κἀκεῖναkakeinathe former . μὴ. . . ἀφιέναι*aphienaineglecting
24ὁδηγοὶhodēgoiguides ! τυφλοίtyphloiYou blind οἱhoi- διϋλίζοντεςdiulizontesYou strain out τὸνton- κώνωπαkōnōpaa gnat τὴνtēn- δὲdebut κάμηλονkamēlona camel . καταπίνοντεςkatapinontesswallow
25ΟὐαὶOuaiWoe ὑμῖνhyminto you , γραμματεῖςgrammateisscribes καὶkaiand ΦαρισαῖοιPharisaioiPharisees , ὑποκριταίhypokritaiyou hypocrites ! ὅτιhoti- καθαρίζετεkatharizeteYou clean τὸtothe ἔξωθενexōthenoutside τοῦtouof the ποτηρίουpotērioucup καὶkaiand τῆςtēs- παροψίδοςparopsidosdish , ἔσωθενesōtheninside δὲdebut γέμουσινgemousinthey are full ἐξexof ἁρπαγῆςharpagēsgreed καὶkaiand ἀδικίαςadikias. . . . ’
26ΦαρισαῖεPharisaiePharisee ! τυφλέtyphleBlind καθάρισονkatharisonclean πρῶτονprōtonFirst τὸtothe ἐντὸςentosinside τοῦtouof the ποτηρίουpotērioucup ‹καὶkaiand τῆςtēs- παροψίδος›paropsidosdish , ἵναhinaso that γένηταιgenētaimay become καὶkaias well . τὸtothe ἐκτὸςektosoutside αὐτῶνautōnwith them καθαρόνkatharonclean
27ΟὐαὶOuaiWoe ὑμῖνhyminto you , γραμματεῖςgrammateisscribes καὶkaiand ΦαρισαῖοιPharisaioiPharisees , ὑποκριταίhypokritaiyou hypocrites ! ὅτιhoti- παρομοιάζετεparomoiazeteYou are like τάφοιςtaphoistombs , κεκονιαμένοιςkekoniamenoiswhitewashed οἵτινεςhoitineswhich ἔξωθενexōthenon the outside , μὲνmen- φαίνονταιphainontailook ὡραῖοιhōraioibeautiful ἔσωθενesōthenon the inside δὲdebut γέμουσινgemousinare full ὀστέωνosteōnbones νεκρῶνnekrōnof dead [men’s] καὶkaiand πάσηςpasēsevery kind of ἀκαθαρσίαςakatharsiasimpurity .
28οὕτωouto[this] καὶkai. . . ὑμεῖςhymeisyou ἔξωθενexōthenon the outside μὲνmen. . . , φαίνεσθεphainestheappear to be τοῖςtois. . . ἀνθρώποιςanthrōpois. . . δίκαιοιdikaioirighteous , ἔσωθενesōthenon the inside δέdebut μεστοὶmestoifull ἐστεesteyou are ὑποκρίσεωςhypokriseōsof hypocrisy καὶkaiand ἀνομίαςanomiaswickedness .
29ΟὐαὶOuaiWoe ὑμῖνhyminto you , γραμματεῖςgrammateisscribes καὶkaiand ΦαρισαῖοιPharisaioiPharisees , ὑποκριταίhypokritaiyou hypocrites ! ὅτιhoti- οἰκοδομεῖτεoikodomeiteYou build τοὺςtous- τάφουςtaphoustombs τῶνtōnfor the προφητῶνprophētōnprophets καὶkaiand κοσμεῖτεkosmeitedecorate τὰtathe μνημεῖαmnēmeiamonuments τῶνtōnof the δικαίωνdikaiōnrighteous .
30καὶkaiAnd λέγετεlegeteyou say , ΕἰEi‘ If ἐμὴνemēnof Me . ” ἐνenin ταῖςtaisthe ἡμέραιςhēmeraisdays τῶνtōn- πατέρωνpaterōnfathers , ἡμῶνhēmōnof our οὐκoukvvv ἂνanvvv ἐμὴνemēnof Me . ” κοινωνοὶkoinōnoipartners αὐτῶνautōnwith them ἐνenin [shedding] τῷthe αἵματιhaimatiblood τῶνtōnof the προφητῶνprophētōnprophets . ’
31ὥστεhōsteSo μαρτυρεῖτεmartyreiteyou testify ἑαυτοῖςheautoisagainst yourselves ὅτιhotithat υἱοίhuioi[the] sons ἐστεesteyou are τῶνtōnof those φονευσάντωνphoneusantōnwho murdered τοὺςtousthe προφήταςprophētasprophets .
32καὶkaithen , ὑμεῖςhymeis- , πληρώσατεplērōsateFill up τὸtothe μέτρονmetronmeasure [of the sin] τῶνtōnof πατέρωνpaterōnfathers . ὑμῶνhymōnyour
33ὄφειςopheisYou snakes ! γεννήματαgennēmataYou brood ἐχιδνῶνechidnōnof vipers ! πῶςpōsHow φύγητεphygētewill you escape ἀπὸapo. . . τῆςtēsthe κρίσεωςkriseōssentence τῆςtēs- γεέννηςgeennēsof hell ?
34ΔιὰDiaBecause of τοῦτοtoutothis ἰδοὺidou- , ἐγὼegōI ἀποστέλλωapostellōam sending πρὸςpros- ὑμᾶςhymasyou προφήταςprophētasprophets καὶkaiand σοφοὺςsophouswise [men] καὶkaiand γραμματεῖςgrammateisteachers . καὶkaiand ἐξexSome of αὐτῶνautōnthem ἀποκτενεῖτεapokteneiteyou will kill καὶkaiand σταυρώσετεstaurōsetecrucify , καὶkaiand ἐξex- αὐτῶνautōn[others] μαστιγώσετεmastigōseteyou will flog ἐνenin ταῖςtais- συναγωγαῖςsynagōgaissynagogues ὑμῶνhymōnyour καὶkaiand διώξετεdiōxetepersecute ἀπὸapoin πόλεωςpoleōstown εἰςeisafter πόλινpolintown .
35ὅπωςhopōsAnd so ἔλθῃelthēwill come ἐφ’eph’upon ὑμᾶςhymasyou πᾶνpanall αἷμαhaimablood δίκαιονdikaion[the] righteous ἐκχυνόμενονekkhunomenonis poured out ἐπὶepion τῆςtēs- γῆςgēsearth , ἀπὸapofrom τοῦtouthe αἵματοςhaimatosblood ἍβελHabelAbel τοῦtouthe δικαίουdikaiourighteous ἕωςheōsto τοῦtouthe αἵματοςhaimatosblood ΖαχαρίουZachariouof Zechariah υἱοῦhuiouson ΒαραχίουBarachiouof Berechiah , ὃνhonwhom ἐφονεύσατεephoneusateyou murdered μεταξὺmetaxybetween τοῦtouthe ναοῦnaoutemple καὶkaiand τοῦtouthe θυσιαστηρίουthysiastērioualtar .
36ἀμὴνamēnTruly λέγωlegōI tell ὑμῖνhyminyou , ὅτιhotithat ἥξειhēxeiwill come ταῦταtautathese things πάνταpantaall ἐπὶepiupon τὴνtēn- γενεὰνgeneangeneration . ταύτηνtautēnthis
37ἸερουσαλὴμIerousalēmO Jerusalem , ἸερουσαλὴμIerousalēmO Jerusalem , who ἀποκτέννουσαapoktennousakills τοὺςtousthe προφήταςprophētasprophets καὶkaiand λιθοβολοῦσαlithobolousastones τοὺςtousthose ἀπεσταλμένουςapestalmenoussent πρὸςprosto αὐτήνautēnher , ποσάκιςposakishow often ἠθέλησαēthelēsaI have longed ἐπισυναγαγεῖνepisynagageinto gather τὰta- τέκναteknachildren {together} , σουsouyour ὃνhon. . . τρόπονtroponas ὄρνιςornisa hen ἐπισυνάγειepisynageigathers τὰta- νοσσίαnossiachicks ἑαυτῆςheautēsher ὑπὸhypounder τὰςtas[her] πτέρυγαςpterygaswings , καὶkaibut οὐκoukvvv ἠθελήσατεēthelēsateyou were unwilling !
38ἰδοὺidouLook , ἀφίεταιaphietaiis left ὑμῖνhyminto you ho- οἶκοςoikoshouse ὑμῶνhymōnyour ‹ἔρημος›erēmosdesolate .
39λέγωlegōI tell γὰρgarFor ὑμῖνhyminyou [that] οὐouvvv μήvvv μήvvv ἴδητεidēteyou will not see ἀπ’ap’again ἄρτιarti. . . ἕωςheōsuntil ἂνan. . . εἴπητεeipēteyou say , ΕὐλογημένοςEulogēmenos‘ Blessed [is] hoHe who ἐρχόμενοςerchomenoscomes ἐνenin ὀνόματonomatnamed ιiof the ΚυρίουKyriouof [the] Lord .’ ”
